What is assessed

2 components. Question formats: short answer, essay, data response, structured.

Paper 1 Business Concepts 1AS
1 h 15 min40 marks40% of AS

Section A: four compulsory 5-mark short-answer questions (the first three in two parts); Section B: one two-part 20-mark essay from a choice of two, on AS content (topics 1.1–5.5).

What the paper looks like

Section A: four compulsory 5-mark questions. Questions 1–3 are typically a 2-mark Define followed by a 3-mark Explain (1 knowledge + 2 application/development); Question 4 is a single 5-mark Analyse. Section B: choose one of two essays, each with an 8-mark Analyse part (two developed points) and a 12-mark Evaluate part (2 AO1, 2 AO2, 2 AO3, 6 AO4 marked by levels). No stimulus data; context comes from the question wording. About 1.5 minutes per mark.

Paper 2 Business Concepts 2AS
1 h 30 min60 marks60% of AS

Two compulsory 30-mark data-response questions, each with six parts based on a stimulus text with written, numerical and/or diagrammatic data, on AS content.

What the paper looks like

Two compulsory 30-mark data-response questions on short business case texts with tables or charts. Each has six parts in the pattern Identify [1], Explain a term [3], Calculate [3], Explain one … [3], Analyse two … [8], Evaluate [12]. Calculations reward method marks, so show the formula and working. Answers must use the case data to gain application marks.

Business and its environment (AS Level). Definitions earn 2 marks only if they are precise: use the key idea of the term rather than an example or a repeat of the words in the question. Learn exact meanings for terms such as limited liability, opportunity cost and added value.
Business and its environment (AS Level). In 8-mark Analyse questions, build a chain of reasoning for each point (because … therefore … this leads to …). Two developed points in context score far more than a list of five undeveloped ones; do not waste time on evaluation that is not credited.
Human resource management (AS Level). When applying motivation theory, link the theory to a specific feature of the business in the data (pay system, job design, workforce type). Naming Maslow or Herzberg alone earns knowledge marks only.
Marketing (AS Level). Market share and market growth are different measures: share compares one firm with the whole market; growth compares the market across time. Always show the formula and state the unit (%).
Operations management (AS Level). Read inventory charts carefully: re-order level = buffer inventory + (usage per period × lead time). Many marks are lost by confusing re-order level with re-order quantity.
Finance and accounting (AS Level). In break-even questions identify current output correctly — it equals break-even output plus margin of safety. Check whether an answer is realistic; an impossibly large contribution per unit signals an arithmetic slip.
Finance and accounting (AS Level). For ways to improve cash flow, explain the effect on inflows or outflows (e.g. an overdraft adds a short-term inflow) rather than restating the method. Remember profit is not the same as cash.
Business and its environment (A Level). For CSR or external-influence essays, give a genuine counter-argument (cost, competitiveness, profit pressure) and reach a supported judgement that depends on the case context, not a generic conclusion.
Marketing (A Level). PED must be calculated as percentage change in quantity ÷ percentage change in price and is normally negative. A price cut is a negative percentage change — keep the sign. Remember higher revenue does not guarantee higher profit.
Operations management (A Level). In CPA show EST and LFT in each node; the critical path is the chain with zero total float. Total float uses LFT, free float uses the EST of the next activity — learn both formulas.
Finance and accounting (A Level). Use the syllabus formula sheet exactly: ARR divides average annual profit by average investment ((initial cost + residual value) ÷ 2), not by the initial cost. For NPV add discounted inflows then subtract the capital cost.
Finance and accounting (A Level). Capital employed = issued shares + reserves + non-current liabilities. State ratios in the correct form (current ratio as x:1, ROCE and gearing as %) and interpret them against a benchmark or competitor.
Human resource management (A Level). Paper 4 HR strategy essays reward an integrated strategy, not a list of unconnected ideas. Evaluate throughout: which element matters most, what it depends on, and how it should be implemented in this business.
