O Level Past Papers and Topical Practice: A Smarter Method

Where to get Cambridge O Level past papers legitimately, how to use topical past-paper-style practice and timed mocks, and which old questions are off-syllabus.

Key takeaways
  • Official Cambridge O Level past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports are published by Cambridge; students usually get them through their school, and Cambridge's website provides syllabuses, specimen papers and, for many subjects, a selection of past papers.
  • Quiz Portal does not host or redistribute official past papers; it provides original, past-paper-style topical questions and timed mocks written to the current syllabuses.
  • Topical practice first, full timed papers later, is the most efficient order: fix topics one at a time, then build speed and stamina.
  • Check the syllabus year before using an old paper: O Level Mathematics 4024 removed Loci and Matrices and made Paper 1 non-calculator from 2025.

O Level past papers are the most widely used revision resource for Cambridge O Level, and for good reason: they show exactly how questions are worded, how marks are split and what examiners reward. Used carelessly, though, they waste time on topics that are no longer examined and on full papers you are not ready for. This guide explains what official past papers are, where to get them, and how to combine them with topical practice and timed mocks.

What are official O Level past papers?

After each exam series, Cambridge publishes three documents for each component:

  • Question papers: the exact papers candidates sat.
  • Mark schemes: the answers and marking points examiners used, including method marks.
  • Examiner reports (principal examiner reports for teachers): comments on how candidates performed on each question and the most common errors.

These are Cambridge's copyright material. Quiz Portal is independent of Cambridge and does not host or redistribute them.

Where to get Cambridge O Level past papers legitimately

  1. Your school. Cambridge schools have access to past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports through Cambridge's School Support Hub. Ask your teacher; most departments keep sets by paper and year.
  2. Cambridge's own website. Each syllabus page on cambridgeinternational.org provides the current syllabus and specimen papers and, for many subjects, a selection of recent past papers.
  3. Published resources. Endorsed textbooks and revision guides include practice in the official style.
Tip Download the syllabus for your exam year first. It lists the papers, timings and every learning outcome, so you can tell at a glance whether an old question is still on the syllabus.

What are O Level topical past papers?

"Topical past papers" means questions grouped by syllabus topic rather than by exam session, so you can practise, for example, only stoichiometry or only trigonometry. Topical practice is the fastest way to fix a weak area because you meet the same idea repeatedly in different forms.

Quiz Portal's topical practice works the same way with original, past-paper-style questions. Each O Level subject page lets you choose an exam year and then practise by topic, take a quick 5-question set, run Smart practice (which adapts to aim for about 70% predicted success) or retry the questions you missed. Written answers get provisional mark-point feedback, never official marks.

Maths O Level past papers: watch the syllabus change

Cambridge O Level Mathematics (Syllabus D) 4024 was revised for first examination in 2025, and the change matters when you use older papers:

Paper (2025–2027 and 2028–2030)TimeMarksWeighting
Paper 1 Non-calculator2 hours10050%
Paper 2 Calculator2 hours10050%
  • Loci and Matrices were removed, so skip those questions in pre-2025 papers.
  • Exponential growth and decay and Surds are new topics, so older papers will not cover them; use topical practice for those.
  • Both papers now mix structured and unstructured questions and print a list of formulas on page 2.
  • Paper 1 is non-calculator, so practise arithmetic with fractions, surds and standard form by hand.

Other O Level syllabuses are changing too. Economics 2281 and Accounting 7707 have new Paper 1 formats from 2027 (40 multiple-choice questions in 60 and 90 minutes respectively), and Computer Science 2210 moves to Python-only programming answers from 2029. Always check which syllabus covers your exam year.

How to mark a past paper properly

  • Mark with the official mark scheme, strictly. A correct final answer without the required working may lose method marks.
  • Read the examiner report for each question you lost marks on. It often names the exact misconception.
  • Record lost marks by topic. After three or four papers, the pattern shows you which topics to return to for topical practice.

Common mistakes with O Level past papers

  • Starting full papers too early. A full paper on half-learned topics mainly tells you what you already know: that you have gaps. Topical practice fixes them faster.
  • Marking generously. If the mark scheme needs a unit, a reason or a specific term, an answer without it does not earn the mark.
  • Doing papers without the time limit. Untimed papers hide the pacing problems that cost marks in the exam hall.
  • Repeating the same paper. Once you remember the answers, the paper no longer tests you. Save some recent papers for the final weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I download O Level past papers?

Ask your school first: Cambridge schools access past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports through the School Support Hub. Cambridge's website also provides syllabuses, specimen papers and, for many subjects, a selection of past papers on each syllabus page.

Does Quiz Portal have official Cambridge past papers?

No. Quiz Portal is independent of Cambridge and does not host or redistribute official papers. It offers original past-paper-style questions organised by topic and timed mocks built to the current paper structure.

What are topical past papers?

They are questions grouped by syllabus topic instead of by exam session. They let you practise one weak topic intensively before moving on to full papers.

Are old Maths O Level past papers still useful?

Yes, with care. Since 2025, 4024 has no Loci or Matrices, has new topics on surds and exponential growth and decay, and Paper 1 is non-calculator, so skip removed topics and do any old Paper 1 without a calculator.

How many past papers should I do before my O Level exams?

There is no set number. Aim to complete several recent papers per component under timed conditions in the final weeks, after topical practice, and review each one with the mark scheme and examiner report.

Quiz Portal is independent and is not affiliated with Cambridge University Press & Assessment or College Board. Practice questions in this guide are original.
